The Embera people originally lived their lives in the Darien province, but due to the proximity to their neighbor Colombia and their guerrillas and drug traffickers, the area turned out a little dangerous.

So that, in 1975 the Embera native Emilio Caisamo and his family founded a new community 4 miles upriver from the Lake Alajuela in the Chagres River (90 minutes from Panama City approx).   He named it Embera Drua.  Later on, Emilio´s sons got married and started new families in this area.  Little by little, other member of the Embera tribe in the Darien Province moved to Lake Alajuela.

The community of Embera Drua are happily living in this new location closer to Panama City because as a consequence of this moving, they have some kind of access to medical services and some education without losing their identity, respecting their traditions and life style.  Come and take the Embera Tour to see by yourself how nice these people are.

As every well organized tribe, the Embera´s learned that they need to have  leadership.   They have a Chief of the village, the secretary, the accountant and different committees.   Every committee has its own chief and organization.

The Chagres area where the Embera tribe inhabits has two seasons around the year, the Dry Season and the Rainy Season.

The dry season (or summer) goes from mid November to March with temperatures around the high 80ºF (high 20ºC) during daytime and 70ºF (low 20ºC) during nighttime.   The rainy season (winter) goes from April to November with temperatures almost the same as the dry season but not so breezy.

The Embera tribe lives on a dam called Lake Alajuela on the upper side of the Chagres River, an hour away from Panama City plus 45 minutes by canoe.  This lake is very important due to the fact that supplies water to the Panama Canal.    The Embera people have built their village 4 miles upriver from Lake Alajuela, within the limits of the National Park.

To take you to the Embera Tour you will be driven by bus or mini van to Lake Alajuela.   On the shores of Lake Alajuela  there´s a dock called “Puerto Corotu” where you will be transport upriver to the Embera Native Community by piragua (native canoe).  This is an hour canoe ride and a wonderful experience out of “National Geographic” you will never forget!

The Embera tribe inhabit the Chagres National Park.   The tribe live by the river, they need it.  The natives use the river for cooking, washing or bathing.  The children learn to swim at very early age.

The Embera Tribe has the ability to make very nice hand-made crafts.   Most of them do it for a living.  They make necklaces, colorful baskets, cocobolo carvings and much more.

This is a traditional dance performed by the Embera women.  They usually are performed in groups during parties and ceremonies.

The instruments they use are native flutes, drums, and maracas.  You will have the opportunity to enjoy the Embera dancing during the Embera Tour in Panama.
